Five Habits Changed My Life
We sometimes imagine that big, life-changing things stem from big, life-changing events. My wake-up call was the day I first read Rachel Hollis’ book Girl, Wash Your Face after having to ask for a seatbelt extender on an airplane, but the transformation didn’t happen all at the same time. While we might imagine that the transformation may come from some remarkable moment in time when really the magic comes from all the small, ordinary moments that happen slowly along the way.
I get asked daily, “How did you do it? How did you lose the weight?” I think half the people that ask are hoping it will be something easy they can replicate for themselves, and the other half assume that it must have been something insanely drastic like surgery that they would never do themselves.
To set the record straight, there were no surgeries, no pills, no shakes, no fad diets, no gym memberships. Just me, a new mindset, and five simple daily habits. That’s how it started.
• move my body 30 minutes
• wake up one hour earlier for me-time
• write down 10 things I’m grateful for
• give up one food that doesn’t bless my body
• drink half my body weight in ounces of water
Practicing these five daily habits as part of Rachel Hollis’ #Last90Days challenge starting October 1, 2018 kickstarted my health journey, helping me lose 123 pounds and completely changing my life.
JUST FIVE SIMPLE HABITS, that’s it.
Improving your life isn’t about making some scary, drastic change overnight. It’s about meeting yourself where you’re at and making small changes over time that you can actually stick with. I didn’t wake up one morning 123 pounds lighter. Instead, I woke up every morning ready to take one baby step forward in the direction of the person I wanted to become.
Our life is the result of the habits we practice daily. Want to see different results? Change your habits - start small, stay consistent. If you’re not sure what changes to make or what habits to start practicing in your own daily life, try this:
For a moment, close your eyes and imagine the future, best possible version of you. Like really visualize them in detail. What do they look like? Where do they live? What do they do for work? For fun? Who do they spend time with? How much money do they make? What kind of clothes do they wear? What’s the first thing they do in the morning and the last thing they do before going to bed?
Now I want you to ask yourself - what habits would this future, best version of me be practicing to be where they are? Write them down and start practicing them today. Because that, my friends, is exactly how you become them.
Do you really want to change your life? Here’s how you do it: take one baby step forward EVERY👏🏼DANG👏🏼DAY. Not just for a week. Not just for a month. But for your life.
During a time when so much in the world feels out of our control, what we can control is ourselves and how we show up daily. In all of this coronavirus craziness, I want to offer my Healthy Habits Checklist to help you stay accountable to yourself while becoming the best version of you.
